Slītere National Park has historically been created as the “Slītere Natural Monument”, which in 1923 was established as a protected natural beauty in an area of 1 100 ha.
According to the Slītere National Park Law (March 13, 2000), the area of the park is currently 16 360 ha of land and 10 130 ha of sea water.
The territory of Slītere National Park is included in the list of places of international importance for birds (PNV) and in the European Union network of specially protected nature territories NATURA 2000 .
