Project Short Description

Protected areas need their local communities and stakeholders to get more involved in their management. Volunteering is a great way to do this. This project provides an invaluable opportunity to advance existing approaches to Lifelong Learning through conservation volunteering at a European level and to find means of consolidating these as integrative parts of protected areas' volunteer management.

The start of the project coincides with the European Year of Volunteers in 2011. This is a great opportunity to promote the project, make people more aware of the role of volunteers in protected areas and to facilitate protected areas in their volunteer management.

The project partners have already cooperated successfully in a Grundtvig Learning Partnership "European Volunteers in Parks" focussing on the transfer of new skills and experiences in volunteer management and gaining experiences in the international exchange of short-term volunteers.

Project Goals

Better management of volunteers (quality standards) in European protected areas, experience exchange and updated volunteer management tools for employees of protected areas.

Project Main Tasks (activities)

  • Dissemination of innovative ideas, material and good practice in the field of volunteer management

  • Collectively developed innovative measures that, in a European context, upgrade learning opportunities in the context of volunteering

  • Carry out trainings for volunteer coordinators in European protected areas

  • Provide exemplary combined working/learning opportunities in parks for foreign volunteers and park employers for mutual tutoring

  • Produce quality standards for professional volunteer management in European parks

  • Organisation of national seminars that raise awareness about the topic of volunteering in the “Year of Volunteering” 2011

  • Report on the benefits of volunteering in parks on local communities and volunteers.

Planed Outputs

The project and its results will further professionalise volunteer management in European protected areas ensuring that it is sustainable and supports the lifelong learning of volunteers. In addition a vital network of skilled volunteer coordinators will be created. Furthermore, it will help broaden the horizons of participating volunteer coordinators in regards to citizenship, ecology, culture and social cohesion. Finally, it will increase the awareness of the value of volunteering in the protected areas themselves.
